How different are Airlines and Airports in communicating through Twitter?

Based on October 2013 data we found out, that a small majority of the Top Airport Twitter Poster interact with community. With about 95% or 96% of all posted Tweets @schiphol and @Airport_FRA head the list of the most interactive Twittairports. Other airports prefered a kind of storytelling or commercial information.

However, the airlines put almost exclusively on interaction. For them, taking care to acute customer needs is in the foreground. Airlines are usually the contractor for passengers. The airport creates an experience for them, the other visitors, staff, crews and shopping clientele.

Usually Interaction means – according the Twitter Glossary – all ways a user has interacted with other accounts, like adding them to a list, sending them a @reply, marking one of their Tweets as a Favorite, retweeting one of theirTweets. Preliminary in our Twittairport scope we join replies and retweets to a interaction. Favorites will come soon.

Airport evacuation @JAXairport has shown how good an incident can be communicated

Forgotten. (C) Heinz Waldukat - Fotolia.comThe Jacksonville International Airport (Florida, USA) was, according to Huffington Post, “evacuated earlier Tuesday [Editor: Oct 2nd, 2913] after police found one suspicious package in the terminal and another in a nearby parking garage… The evacuation left planeloads of passengers stuck on the tarmac.” Fortunately this incident was a hoax.

The Dusseldorf Airport in Germany was being evacuated too a week before (Sept 24th, 2013) due to a suspicious luggage. This event resulted in a “severe disturbance”, as the Wall Street Journal quoted officials. The unattended luggage proved also to be harmless. It only contained food.

In both cases, it is important to emphasize that an evacuation to safety of the airport guests and staff was adequate.

In Dusseldorf, the affected people were mostly outraged by the information policy. The electronic media as well apparently kept the requests do not stand There is a Twitter account for the German airport. This is clearly not officially active: Fluhafen_DUS has in the name of even a typo. Instead, it is – translated – “Aiport_DUS”.

The airport management in Jacksonville, however, came quickly with information about the case. The numbers of new followers and status messages in Twitter for example were significant higher than the usual monthly values.
